Grizzly Bear
(Ursus arctos horribilis)

The Grizzly Bear is a magnificent mountain monarch. Grizzlies depend on undisturbed spaces in the wild. Human encroachment on their habitat is a continued threat to their survival.

Facts: Grizzly bears feed on berries (blueberries, bearberries, etc.), roots, bulbs of plants, ground dwelling rodents, and most importantly whitebark pine nuts. Sometimes grizzlies will locate a cache of these nuts that a ground squirrel has stored for the winter. Unlike the image portrayed by Hollywood films, grizzlies are not active predators and 95% of their diet is vegetarian. With their excellent sense of smell, grizzlies can locate carrion from miles away and will readily feed on it. And, on occasion, they will dig out ground squirrels and marmots.
